Little known facts about Regensburg

  • regensburg_08_2006_2Oscar Schindler lived there after the war until he emigrated to Argentina in 1948
  • Meetings of the Prince Electors, or the Imperial diet (Reichstag) or the town council all took place at a green table, because green was the symbolic colour of a speedy and good decision. The expression in German ‘am grünen Tisch entschieden’  now tends to mean a theoretical decision with little regard to the pragmatics of it, but it’s claimed that Regensburg’s green table was the origin.
  • The famous Goliath house probably took its name not from the magnificent painting on its wall, but from a previous building on that site which accomodated wandering clericals called Goliards. So the house was already known as the Goliathhouse before the 16th century, when the painting was executed
